

Mr. Philipsen, the president of ArchPlan Inc., has over two and a half decades of experience with residential design and housing. His thesis at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, dealt with, among other things, the typology of residential floor plans. In 1976 he worked with public housing residents on the rehabilitation of their units and published a tenant hand book. He worked as project manager/architect in award winning mid size design firms in Germany and the US and in his own company on the following residential projects:

Baltimore, MD

New construction of four townhouses on an infill lot in Locust Point. Houses maintain a fairly traditional street facade, changing to a more modern aesthetic in the rear. All houses have rear decks, trellises covered in greenery, and planting strips to make the back of the house an enjoyable green space while still allowing vehicular circulation and parking.

Deck and Screened Porch, Residence
Westminster, MD

Design a deck that wraps around the rear of the house, along with a screened porch. ArchPlan developed a two-level system of decks, balconies, and a porch that allows both sun exposure for the entire day, as well as a sense of place for each portion of the deck system. The deck and screened porch add a sense of scale to the yard side of the house and eases the transition between the house and the surrounding terrain by creating a zone of transition between the indoor spaces and the outdoors. Finished Basement, Residence

Laurel, MD

Finish full basement of this new physician's residence with a family room, a study, and a guest suite. ArchPlan brought daylight into the basement area. The study is separated from the playroom with a glass wall, spreading the daylight throughout areas of the basement that have no windows. The simple basement stair was turned into a feature with a bottom landing allowing an easy turn into the family room. Services: Design, construction documents, and construction administration.

Waterfront Residence - Forensic Architecture

Saint Michael's, MD

ArchPlan provided design services and construction administration for the repair of this one million dollar-plus residence that was extensively damaged by water and termites in Talbot County. Provided expert witness testimony in the arbitration case relating to the damage.

Straw Bale House

Brookville, MD

ArchPlan assisted a New York architect in obtaining a Montgomery County building permit for this house using alternative construction techniques. ArchPlan reviewed the design and provided structural calculations.
