Mr. Philipsen, the president of ArchPlan Inc., has over three decades of experience with residential design and housing.

His thesis at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, dealt with, among other things, the typology of residential floor plans.

The role of the architect in Germany includes many aspects which in the US are typically the responsibility of the General Contractor such as: Quantity take off, bidding and negotiating each individual trade and organizing the construction schedule. This background allows Mr. Philipsen a particular understanding of cost and the needs of construction.

In 1976 he worked with public housing residents on the rehabilitation of their units and published a tenant hand book. He worked as project manager/architect in award winning mid size design firms in Germany and the US and in his own company on the following housing and residential projects:

Station North Townhomes, 1700 block North Calvert Street
Baltimore, MD
 

 

  New construction of 32 new townhomes in the Station North Arts District near Penn Station.  With features such as split-level floor plans and modern facades, the project seeks a reinterpretation of the traditional rowhouse.   Project was completed in 2007 and received a design award from the Masonry Institute of Maryland.

Printer's Square Apartments
Baltimore, MD

Rehabilitation of three existing industrial buildings and a historic firehouse in Mount Vernon.  The building now houses over 60 apartment units, a leasing office, a community room and landscaped courtyard.  Project was completed in Summer 2007.  This project won a preservation project award from Baltimore Heritage in 2007.

Renovation and conversion of an existing historic commercial  building on north Charles Street in downtown Baltimore into 25 market rate apartments and street level retail.

The Aliceanna at Fells Point
Baltimore, MD
aliceanna_front.jpg (489958 bytes) This new 22-unit  condominium development is located on an infill site in historic Fells Point.  ArchPlan's design split the condos into two buildings facing onto a shared landscaped courtyard.  All units have two orientations, allowing all units to have cross-ventilation and views into the courtyard.

  New nineteen-unit townhome community in southwest Baltimore near Union Square.  The facades of the individual units will reference traditional rowhouse materials and rhythms but with contemporary transformations.

ArchPlan provided schematic design and design development services.

Ten new single-family townhomes on a corner lot in Sandtown-Winchester.  A variety of unit types and sizes create flexibility for developers and buyers.  Individual units feature split-level plans, large windows, sunrooms, and balconies.

Townhomes, Duncan and Lamley Streets, Butcher's Hill

"Walkable village" consisting of 7 new townhomes, 11 renovated townhomes, and a 4-unit renovated condominium building with carriage house.  Pedestrians and living space are given priority over vehicular traffic on the two minor streets.  The new townhomes are centemporary inside and out, and the townhomes and condominiums are completely renovated for modern living.

ArchPlan's design for five new townhomes in an established neighborhood creates new opportunities for homeownership.  Each four-story townhouse contains two three-bedroom units: one owner unit and one rental unit.  Traditional materials and proportions help to incorporate this project with its surroundings, while various details lend the houses an updated aesthetic.

Rehabilitation of an early 20th century apartment building near Druid Hill Park in the Reservoir Hill Historic District.  The structure now houses 26 flats and bi-level apartments, many with balconies, bays, or sunrooms.

Rehab of 72 low to moderate income garden apartments in nine two story buildings near downtown Frederick and 21 new townhouse units.
Samester Park Apartments
Baltimore, MD
Rehabilitation of 74 apartments in two large three story buildings on Park Heights Avenue. The apartment complex represents a unique example of Art Deco design.  The project uses historic preservation tax credits and HUD funds and received a Baltimore Heritage Preservation Award.

140 new rowhouse units on a former downtown industrial site for homeownership. ArchPlan designed the site plan, and developed floor plans and facade designs for a developer's proposal. The plans won the 1994 Baltimore AIA award for design excellence.
